Key Concepts

Choosing the best camping lantern for you

Lumens – a lumen is a measure of the total quantity of visible light emitted by a source per unit of time. In other words, how bright the light is. Usually brighter lights will consumer more energy. If you want a really bright light to last a long time you will need a big battery pack. We find anything beyond about 1,200 lumens can be too bright for a general use camping lantern.

LED vs Fuel – LED lights are great for many things and within camping lanterns they are exceptional. Lots of light at a low energy cost. For almost all camping needs we recommend LED camp lanterns because most people will bring the lantern into the car or tent.

Rechargeability – Overtime the cost of purchasing batteries over and over again can really add up. We prefer a rechargeable camping lantern. Also, many of the rechargable camping lanterns can also act as a batter pack to charge (via USB) your other devices. If this type of functionality is interesting to you, check out the Streamlight Super Siege Camping Lantern.

Living in the Northeast, rain happens… but now I have the knowledge and gear to go rain or shine. Glad I found this site! Thanks.

I had a few more questions about one of the tents I was interested in. After posting on the group page I got some great input. My tent is perfect for the camping I like do to.

I get cold quickly. After learning about sleeping bags here I was able to find one that keeps me warm and isn’t to heavy to carry. Thanks for sharing your expertise guys and gals.
